Angana N. Shah, MD
Dr. Shah is a retina specialist. She graduated from Jefferson Medical College in 1998. Her ophthalmology residency was completed at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. She completed her surgical retina fellowship at Boston Medical Center in 2004. Both involved training at local Veterans Administration hospitals.
Dr. Shah is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists, American Academy of Ophthalmology, and New Jersey Academy of Ophthalmology.
Joshua Mali, MD
Dr. Mali is a retina specialist. He graduated from West Virginia University School of Medicine in 2009. His ophthalmology residency was completed at Albany Medical College. His surgical vitreo-retinal fellowship training was from 2013-2015 at Albany Medical College/Retina Consultants while serving as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology. During his fellowship, he became one of the first retinal specialists in the United States to use Iluvien, a new steroid implant for diabetic macular edema.
Dr. Mali is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a Fellow of the American Society of Retina Specialists.

Initial Consultation and Examination
All patients are dilated for their initial exam. It is suggested that you have a driver. Please bring glasses for both distance and near, insurance card and referral (if referral is required by insurance), a list of current medications, and pertinent medical records.

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
This is a non-contact retinal scanning device used to study the anatomy of the central retina. It requires dilation of the pupils and provides an electronic biopsy of the macula. This process takes about 15 minutes.
Digital Fluorescein Angiography
Frequently fluorescein angiography is performed to evaluate retinal disease. A technician will photograph you using a digital camera system in the office. This study requires a small injection of vegetable dye into a vein in your arm. Serial photographs are taken of your retina through a dilated pupil. The test takes approximately 15-20 minutes. The physician will review the results with you. Most patients tolerate this test very well without any side effects and do not require any pre-medication.
B-Scan Ultrasonography
This is a non-invasive imaging device for the eye which allows us to evaluate the retina when there is poor visualization by examination. It takes approximately 10 minutes.
Laser Treatment
This is an ambulatory procedure performed in the laser suite at our Flemington office. It is recommended that a family member drive you for this appointment, as dilation is required. Laser is performed for many retinal conditions including diabetes, macular degeneration, retinal holes, and retinal tears. These procedures are typically pain free. You can resume most of your normal activities afterwards.
Intravitreal Injections
We offer treatment for wet macular degeneration, vein occlusion, and diabetic retinopathy. Medications, such as Avastin, Eylea, Lucentis, Triesence, and others, are injected in the eye to block growth of abnormal vessels and alleviate swelling in the retina. Injections are given with topical anesthesia, so there is usually minimal pain. Treatments are started monthly and then extended, as needed.
Surgery
Dr. Shah performs retinal surgery at Capital Health Medical Center in Pennington, New Jersey. Most surgeries are done on an outpatient basis.
Dr. Mali performs surgery at Somerset Eye Institute in Somerset, New Jersey.
