How much pain should I expect following the laser treatment?

We recommend you go home and try to sleep for several hours following treatment. LASIK patients may experience burning and stinging eyes while PRK patients may be uncomfortable for several days following treatment. Some symptoms may include light sensitivity, burning, stinging and scratchy, watery eyes.

How does the laser know how much prescription to correct?

Many measurements are obtained pre-operatively. These measurements are programmed into the laser.

How long does the treatment take?

The treatment itself only takes about 10 minutes per eye. Total time at the laser center is about 2 hours.

Do you operate on both eyes the same day?

Yes. Your doctor may discuss other options, custom to your needs.

What kind of anesthesia is used for Laser Vision Correction?

Anesthetic eye drops are used. Patients are comfortable throughout the surgical treatment.

Can I see the treatment as it is being performed on me?

No. You will be asked to focus on a green light. Your vision will become dim for a second or two.

What does post-operative care involve?

Patients are given specific post-operative care instructions including the use of eye drops and clear shields worn for one week to protect your eyes during sleep.

How long after treatment do I need to wait before I can take a bath or shower?

We recommend not showering until the next day.

How long after treatment will it be before I see well?

LASIK patients usually achieve visual clarity within 24 hours. Continued improvement occurs over the next two months. PRK patients may not see vision improvement for 1 week or more. In PRK, once the surface layer (epithelium) heals in 3-5 days, patients begin a period of rapid visual improvement.

How long after surgery before I can wear eye makeup?

We recommend not wearing eye makeup for one week following surgery. It is a good idea to use all new eye makeup, including mascara, to avoid potential infections following treatment.

When can I go back to work?

Most LASIK patients may return to work the day after surgery. PRK patients may not feel well enough to return to work right away.

When can I drive after surgery?

Most LASIK patients may drive the day after surgery once they see the doctor for a one-day, post-operative visit. PRK patients are not permitted to drive until they receive clearance from the doctor which usually occurs 3-5 days after surgery.

When can I swim following surgery?

You should not swim, scuba, or snorkel for one week following surgery.

Will I need reading glasses after surgery?

Patients under the age of 40 naturally read well enough without reading glasses following correction. As patients enter their early 40's, aging lens changes, known as Presbyopia, affect the lens of the eye. The lens becomes stiffer and cannot change shape for near focusing needed to read. Since laser vision correction does not correct Presbyopia, patients over 40 may require reading glasses just as patients without laser vision correction will.

How many times do I need to be seen following treatment?

Most patients are seen following surgery for one day, one week, three month and six month visits. Staff is available anytime you have questions or need attention.

Can someone looking at my eyes tell that I have had LVC treatment?

No. There are usually no visible signs that you have had laser vision correction.

If I have Laser Vision Correction, can I have other eye surgery later in life?

Yes. Cataract, glaucoma, and retinal surgeries can all be performed following refractive surgery. You do not forfeit the opportunity for future eye care by having refractive surgery.

What is the long-term effect of Laser Vision Correction treatment?

Your eyes may take some time to become fully healed. Your vision may fluctuate until this occurs. However, once your eyes are fully healed you can expect the benefits of treatment to be permanent. The benefits of surgery do not wear off. There is no evidence of long-term eye health damage due to Laser Vision Correction treatment. Following the initial healing time of 1-3 months, the benefit of treatment is life-long.
